Forgiving is not releasing the offender for legal obligations. It is not condoning or excusing, which implies there is a justification. It is not forgetting or refusing to remember the event. It is not reconciling, which implies there is restored trust and contact. And it is not pretending that everything is fine.
Instead 'forgiveness' is a gift for ourselves which we do to internally to help us to end our pain, anger and resentment around an event. An action taken for us to move forward in a more positive direction in life.
